Hanna Monte, a nineteen year old alumna of Somers High School and resident of Lake Purdys, has been diagnosed with colo-rectal cancer after getting peritonitis while on a study-abroad program in Spain. Her parents dropped everything and flew to Spain to oversee her medical care and look after her, and have continued to do so since her med-evac'ed return to the US in May. Because of the intense needs of their daughter, during this time neither parent has been able to work. The treatment is expensive, as are her prescriptions. Her college health insurance plan, which has an annual
$800.00 limit for prescriptions and $500,000 per covered illness, will cover only a fraction of the expenses that are being incurred. There have been numerous complications and Hanna has been in and (briefly)out of hospitals for the past eight weeks. The resulting co-payments and out of pocket expenses are difficult if not impossible for her family to pay.

- BRING GENTLY USED CHILDREN'S ITEMS TO SELL TO THE ONCE UPON A CHILD STORE
We are holding a fundraiser for Hanna with the new Once Upon A Child store in Somers Commons. If you are unfamiliar with the store, Once Upon A Child sells new and gently used children's items such as clothing from newborn to size 16, shoes, toys, and baby equipment. The premise of the fundraiser is quite simple. Since Once Upon A Child stocks their inventory by paying cash for gently used items from the general pub lic, we ask for supporters of Hanna to sell items to the store in her name. As opposed to the store paying the seller as they normally would, all proceeds will go to the Monte family. Donations will be accepted during the entire month of August.
In addition, Once Upon A Child will designate Tuesday, August 10th as Hanna's day and they will donate 10% of their gross sales receipts to the cause.
This fundraiser has been set up to be easy for you. However, we must emphasize that Once Upon A Child will only buy gently used items that they can stock in the store. Please only bring items in gently used, new like condition that are suitable for resale. Here's how-
1. Bring your gently used items to the store and let them know that you would like to sell the items in the name of the Monte Family Fundraiser. No appointment is necessary to sell items.
2. Once Upon A Child will review your items, check safety and recalls, and process a quote for all items accepted for your review.
3. If the quote is accepted by you, Once Upon A Child will write a check in your name to the Monte Family through the Somers Lions Club Charitable Foundation. You will receive a receipt to use for your tax deduction.
Once Upon A Child will buy clothing, from newborn to size 16, toys, books, furniture, and equipment such as strollers and high chairs. They do not accept car seats, cribs, room decor items, or stuffed animals. Please be advised that they will only purchase items that are in gently used, new like condition. Once Upon A Child wants to buy as much from you and raise as much for this fundraiser as they can and they do not want to return items to you that are not accepted, but items will not be purchased if they do not meet the standards of the store. Clothing should be stain free without wear and tear. Equipment should be up to date and in good working order. Toys and books should be clean, without markings, and ready to be put on the shelf. If you have questions about items that will be accepted, feel free to call or
email the store.
Once Upon A Child is located in Somers Commons, between NY Sports Club and Chili's, 80 rte. 6, Baldwin Place. (The Danbury Once Upon A Child IS NOT associated with this fundraiser.)
