Town Profile The Town of Somers is governed by a five-member Town Board, which functions as the legislative body of the Town and is responsible for the ‘health, safety and welfare’ of its residents. The Board enacts all policies and laws for the Town. The Board is composed of four Town Council persons, each elected to a four-year term, and the Supervisor. The Supervisor, who functions as the chief fiscal officer and the chief operating officer of the Town, is elected to a two-year term and has three support staff. A Deputy Supervisor is appointed to assist with the varied duties of the Supervisor in the absence of the Supervisor. The Town Clerk, elected to a four-year term, is responsible for the safe keeping of Town records, supervising elections, issuing a number of licenses, (including Marriage Licenses and permits), and as the registrar of vital statistics, is responsible for recording births and deaths within the Town. The Tax Receiver is elected for a four-year term and is responsible for the collection of Town, County and school taxes levied by the Town. The Superintendent of Highways is elected to a four-year term and is responsible for maintaining all Town roads in a safe condition. In addition to its legislative responsibilities, the Town Board is responsible for the adoption of the Town budget each fall, no later than December 20th. The Town Board also makes appointments to the various boards and advisory groups that operate within the framework of the Town government. Among these groups are the Planning Board, Zoning Board of Appeals, Conservation Board, Parks and Recreation Board, Library Board of Trustees, Open Space Committee, Substance Abuse Council, Bureau of Fire Prevention, Board of Ethics, Board of Assessment Review, Architectural Review Advisory Board, Historic Properties Board and Somers Archeological Resource Advisory Committee. Two Town Justices, each elected for a four-year term, preside over the Town Court. Other departments and functions in the Town include the Amawalk Shenorock Water District, Assessor’s Office, Building Inspector’s Office, Finance Office, Highway Department, Senior Nutrition Program, Parks & Recreation Department, Planning & Engineering Office, part-time Police Department and Somers Library.
